Sawai Madhopur is located in Rajasthan and is basically the base for visiting the renowned Ranthambore National Park. Laid out on the lines of a planned city, it was built by Sawai Madho Singh I, the Maharaja of Jaipur, during the late 18th century and is named after him. The city has a turbulent past, with many battles fought here, and has been passed from one ruling dynasty to another. Each ruler, from the Mughal emperors to the Rajput kings, contributed to the ornamentation of the city, building temples and a fort here.

The Fort:

Ranthambore National Park:
Ranthambore National Park
is one of the most important tourist attractions in Sawai Madhopur. This is world famous National Reserve located in Rajasthan near Sawai Madhopur. Earlier the hunting preserve of the Maharajas of Jaipur, the Park at Ranthambore was once the scene of royal hunting parties. Today, it is famous for its tigers and is one of the best places in the country to see these royal predators in the wild. A good time to visit is between November and April when the nature of the dry deciduous forests makes sightings common. Declared a sanctuary in 1955, it became a Tiger Reserve in 1979 under Project Tiger.

By Rail: The railway station at Sawai Madhopur connects the town with Delhi, Mumbai and other major cities in Western India.
