Bappu Rawal founded
Chittorgarh in the 7th century. Before it was known as
Chitrakut. It was the capital of the former Rajput State
'Mewar'. The history of Chittorgarh is a saga of
bravery, blood and sacrifice. It was sacked thrice by the
Muslim rulers. Chittorgarh gained reputation during the
reign of the Rajput ruler, Rana Kumbha. Chittorgarh
is famous for historical personalities like Maharana Pratap,
Meera Bai, Panna Bhai and Rani Padmini.

Chittorgarh Fort: Chittorgarh fort is a huge and
massive structure. The entrance to the fort is provided
through seven gates and lead up to the main gate, Ram Pol
(gate of Ram). The main gate of the fort itself is Suraj Pol
(Sun gate). As per the legend, Bhim, a Pandava, on track the
construction of the fort. There are a number of wonderful
monuments inside the fort itself.
Vijay Stambh (Tower
of Victory): Vijay Stambh was built in 1440 A.D. by
Maharana Kumbha to celebrate his victory over Mohamed
Khilji. It rises up to 37m in 9 carved storeys decorated by
the Hindu scriptures. You can climb to the 8th floor and
enjoy a good view of the whole town.
Padmini's Palace,
Chittorgarh: Considered to be the Cleopatra of the East,
Rani Padmini is a well known figure in the Indian legend. In
her honor, the Padmini's Palace had been erected in
Chittorgarh. It is a wonderful structure that recalls the
surprising beauty of the queen. Surrounded by water on all
sides, the white Palace reverberate the astonishing beauty
of the queen who gave up her life when Ala-ud-din Khilji
conquered Chittorgarh, in order to retain her honor.
Kirti Stambh (Tower
of Fame): Kirti Stambh was built by a wealthy Jain
merchant in the 12th century. It's 22m high and is older and
smaller than the Vijay Stambh. It is devoted to Adinath, the
first Jain Tirthankar (Jain teacher). Inside the tower there
are many naked figures of the various Tirthankars to be
seen.
